It is a substrate for the enzyme D-glucuronate isomerase which catalyzes the reaction aldehydo-D-glucuronate -> D-fructuronate. It is also a product in the spontaneous reaction D-glucopyranuronate -> aldehydo-D-glucuronate (BioCyc compound: CPD-15530).
